Hospitality and Zacchaeus

I’ve often reflected on the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19 because it speaks to the heart of what we do at Heritage. We want to help people discover and deepen their faith in Jesus, and one of the most powerful ways we can do that is through genuine hospitality. In this story, Jesus turns a simple meal into a life-changing moment of connection. Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector in Jericho, which meant he was wealthy but also deeply disliked by the people around him. Tax collectors were known for taking advantage of others, often collecting more than required and keeping the extra for themselves. Still, Zacchaeus was curious. He wanted to see Jesus.

When Jesus entered Jericho, the crowd was loud and demanding. They wanted miracles and attention, but Jesus wasn’t focused on the crowd. He noticed one man in a tree. He didn’t ignore Zacchaeus or judge him based on his past. Instead, He called him by name and said He wanted to come to his house. That moment shows us what real hospitality looks like. It’s about seeing individuals instead of crowds, looking past someone's reputation, meeting people exactly where they are, and creating space for meaningful connection.

Hospitality like this is different from just being friendly or hosting events. It’s about intentionally reaching out to people who may not be like us. It’s about crossing social, cultural, or economic lines. It’s about offering a welcome that reflects the heart of Jesus. That’s the kind of culture we want at Heritage. Every Sunday, every gathering, every conversation is a chance to carry the gospel through the way we welcome others.

Zacchaeus’ life was transformed not by a sermon or a miracle, but by being invited to the table. That one meal led him to give away half his possessions and make things right with the people he had wronged. That’s the power of hospitality. It opens the door for God to work in someone’s heart.

So, here’s what I’d like us to think about this week. Who do you need to look up and notice? Are there people you’ve unintentionally overlooked because they don’t fit into your usual circle? How can you use your home, your table, or even your lunch break to create space for ministry? Start small. Learn the name of the barista or server you see often. Invite someone new to share a meal. Take a moment to truly notice someone who might otherwise be invisible. At Heritage, we believe hospitality is part of the gospel. Sometimes the most powerful sermon is simply offering someone a seat at your table. That’s where transformation begins.
