Life can sometimes feel like trying to assemble one of those massive LEGO sets without the instruction booklet. You fumble with the pieces, hoping they’ll somehow fit together, but eventually, you realize you need help from someone who knows the plan. Isn’t that a picture of our faith journey? Left on our own, we struggle to make sense of it all. But Jesus steps in—He is the plan, and through Him, we find clarity and purpose.
What Holds Us Back?
In Galatians, Paul speaks to an issue that could have derailed the early church: legalism. Some believed Gentiles had to follow Jewish customs before they could fully follow Christ. Paul wasn’t having it. He made it clear—it's not Jesus plus anything; it’s Jesus alone. Faith in Him is all that matters.
We may not face the same challenges today, but other things can creep in and block us from keeping in step with the Spirit. It might be our packed schedules, lingering shame from past mistakes, or the belief that we need to earn God's love by doing everything “just right.” These barriers distract us from the abundant life Jesus offers.
Why Legalism Robs Us of Abundant Life
Paul uses the image of a race to show how legalism trips us up. Imagine being cut off mid-stride—it’s frustrating and demoralizing. That’s what happens when we let rigid rules or false teachings distract us from Christ. The solution isn’t trying harder to follow more rules; it’s a deeper, freer faith rooted in love.
What Kind of Life Does Jesus Want for Us?
Jesus’ words in John 10:10 offer so much hope: “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” This abundant life isn’t just about eternity—it starts now. And let’s clear something up: when Jesus mentions the “thief” in this verse, He’s not talking about Satan. He’s talking about the weight of legalism and religious rules that steal our joy and intimacy with Him.
We’re not called to just wait around for heaven. Jesus invites us to experience a full, vibrant life today.
Taking the Next Step
This week, let’s slow down and reflect. Ask yourself:
• What’s getting in the way of experiencing the abundant life Jesus offers?
• Are you caught up in rules and expectations instead of leaning into your relationship with Him?
• How can you embrace the joy and freedom of walking with Jesus right now?
Here’s a simple challenge: spend a few quiet moments each day focusing on your relationship with Jesus. Don’t worry about getting everything perfect. Just enjoy being with Him. Let His presence remind you that life with Him isn’t about checking boxes—it’s about connection.
Let’s step into the grace and abundance Jesus has for us, one faithful step at a time.
Blessings,
Pastor John
