Keeping in Step with the Spirit: Finding Freedom Through Service and Love

Writer's picture: John JoinerJohn Joiner

As I reflect on Paul’s words in Galatians 5:13-15, I’m reminded of how easily we can misunderstand what freedom in Christ truly means. It’s not about doing whatever we please; it’s about being set free from sin so that we can live lives of love and service to others. This passage challenges us to embrace that freedom and live it out in the community around us.

Christian freedom isn’t just about personal liberty—it’s about being liberated from the chains of sin that hold us back from God’s purpose for our lives. But with this freedom comes a responsibility: it’s not for indulging ourselves but for serving one another humbly in love. Paul says it so plainly: “The entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: Love your neighbor as yourself.”

This truth simplifies what can feel overwhelming. We don’t need to get caught up in endless rules or obligations. Instead, we’re called to love and serve others as an expression of our freedom in Christ. And that kind of love starts right here in our own church family.

Sometimes we think of “sins of the flesh” as only big, obvious sins, but it’s much broader than that. It’s anything in our human nature that pulls us away from God’s calling. The answer isn’t just avoiding sin—it’s replacing it with something better: loving and serving the people God has placed around us.

So, who are we called to love? Jesus reminds us to start close to home—with our church family. By loving one another deeply and authentically, we create the kind of community that naturally draws others to Jesus.

Here’s what that can look like:

Getting to know people beyond Sunday morning small talk.

Joining a Connect Group where real relationships can grow.

Finding ways to serve together and support one another through life’s ups and downs.

This week, I’m challenging myself—and inviting you—to take a step deeper into our church family. Who haven’t you had the chance to connect with yet? What’s one way you could go beyond the surface and build a stronger relationship? Let’s ask ourselves:

Am I loving others with genuine care or out of obligation?

How can I use the freedom I have in Christ to bless someone this week?

When we love each other well within the church, the world notices. They’ll see something different, something real, and they’ll be drawn to Christ through the way we live out our faith.

Let’s keep in step with the Spirit and show the love of Jesus—not just to the world, but to each other. It’s the foundation for everything else we’re called to do.

Blessings,

Pastor John Joiner
