5-Day Devotional Series
Called for Such a Time as This
Day 1: The Power of the Unnamed
In 1934, an unnamed usher at a tent revival made a simple decision that changed history. When he saw two teenagers about to leave because of overcrowding, he made room for them. One of those boys was Billy Graham, who would later lead millions to Christ. This usher never knew the eternal impact of his small act of kindness.
We live in a world obsessed with recognition and fame, but God often works through the unnamed and unnoticed. The Book of Esther reminds us that even when God's name isn't explicitly mentioned, He's orchestrating events through ordinary people doing extraordinary things. You might feel like your contributions are small or insignificant, but God sees differently.
Every day, you have opportunities to be that unnamed usher. Maybe it's offering encouragement to a struggling friend, volunteering at church, or just making space for someone who feels left out. These moments might seem ordinary to you, but they could be pivotal in someone else's story.
Your faithfulness in small things positions you to be part of God's bigger plan. You don't need a platform or recognition to make a kingdom impact. Sometimes the most significant work happens quietly, through people who simply show up and serve.
Bible Verse
"And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" - Esther 4:14
Reflection Question
What "small" acts of service or kindness might God be calling you to that could have eternal significance in someone else's life?
Prayer
Lord, help me to see the significance in the small moments. Give me eyes to recognize opportunities to serve others, even when no one else notices. Use my ordinary acts of faithfulness for Your extraordinary purposes. Amen.
Day 2: Positioned for Purpose
Queen Esther found herself in an impossible situation. She could stay silent and safe, or risk everything to save her people. When her cousin Mordecai challenged her with those famous words about being positioned "for such a time as this," she realized her royal position was for a purpose.
Just like Esther, you haven't arrived at your current position by accident. Your job, your neighborhood, your relationships, your season of life—none of it is random. God has placed you where you are right now because He has kingdom work for you to do.
Maybe you're in a workplace where you're the only believer, positioned to be a light in the darkness. Perhaps you're in a season of financial blessing, positioned to be generous toward others. Or maybe you're walking through difficulty, positioned to offer hope to someone facing similar struggles.
The question isn't whether you're qualified or ready. Esther certainly didn't feel ready to approach the king uninvited. The question is whether you'll trust that God has positioned you exactly where you need to be. Your current circumstances aren't obstacles to overcome; they're the very platform from which God wants to work through you.
Bible Verse
"And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" - Esther 4:14
Reflection Question
Looking at your current circumstances and relationships, how might God have positioned you to make a kingdom impact right where you are?
Prayer
Father, help me see my current position through Your eyes. Show me how You want to use my circumstances, relationships, and resources for Your kingdom purposes. Give me courage to step into the purpose You have for me in this season. Amen.
Day 3: Beyond Survival Mode
There's a dramatic difference between surviving and thriving. When we operate from a scarcity mindset, we hoard resources, give minimally, and focus on self-preservation. But when we shift to kingdom thinking, everything changes. We move from asking "How little can I give?" to "How much can I impact?"
This is about our entire approach to life. Instead of protecting what we have, we become conduits of blessing. Instead of focusing on our limitations, we focus on God's resources working through us.
When churches and individuals make this shift, the results are remarkable. Communities are transformed and the gospel spreads in ways we never imagined. It's the difference between a stagnant pond and a flowing river. One preserves what it has, while the other brings life wherever it goes.
Moving beyond survival mode requires faith. It means trusting that God will provide for our needs as we seek first His kingdom. It means believing that our small contributions, when combined with others and blessed by God, can accomplish far more than we could ever imagine.
The beautiful thing is that this shift brings joy, not burden. When we stop clutching tightly to what we have and start holding it with open hands, we discover the freedom and fulfillment that comes from being part of something bigger than ourselves.
Bible Verse
"And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" - Esther 4:14
Reflection Question
In what areas of your life are you operating from a survival mindset rather than a kingdom mindset, and how might God be calling you to shift your perspective?
Prayer
Lord, help me move beyond survival mode into kingdom thinking. Transform my heart from scarcity to abundance, from hoarding to generosity. Show me how to be a conduit of Your blessing to others. Amen.
Day 4: The Ripple Effect of Generosity
A five-dollar bill might not seem like much, but in God's economy, small gifts create massive ripple effects. When you give generously, you're not just meeting an immediate need. You're setting in motion a chain reaction that extends far beyond what you can see.
Think about it: when a family receives help during a difficult time, they don't just experience financial relief. They experience hope and the tangible love of God. That gratitude and grace doesn't stay contained with that one family. It flows out into their workplace, their neighborhood, their children's schools. They become carriers of the generosity they received.
The same is true when missionaries are supported or when someone's basic needs are met through the church. Your contribution becomes part of their story, and their story touches countless others. The gospel spreads and lives are changed, all because you chose to give cheerfully.
This is why generosity is never really about the amount. It's about the heart behind the gift and the God who multiplies it. Your faithful giving, combined with others', creates a powerful force for good in the world. You may never know this side of heaven how far your generosity has traveled or how many lives it has touched.
Every act of generosity is a declaration of faith that God will use what we offer, that His kingdom is worth investing in, and that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves.
Bible Verse
"And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" - Esther 4:14
Reflection Question
How might your acts of generosity be creating ripple effects in your community and beyond that you may never fully see?
Prayer
God, help me to give with a generous heart, trusting that You will multiply my offerings in ways I cannot imagine. Use my gifts to create ripple effects of hope and transformation in the lives of others. Amen.
Day 5: Making Room for God to Work
That unnamed usher in 1934 did something beautifully simple. He made room. When he saw those two teenagers about to leave the crowded tent, he didn't just feel sorry for them. He acted. He created space for them to encounter God, and through that simple act, Billy Graham's ministry was born.
Making room is one of the most powerful things we can do. It might mean making room in our budget for generosity or making room in our schedule for serving others. When we create space for God to work, He shows up in ways that exceed our expectations.
As we conclude this week's journey together, the challenge is clear: God wants to use you for such a time as this. Not someday when you're more qualified or have more resources, but right now, right where you are. Your gifts, your finances, your time, your unique position—all of it matters in God's kingdom.
The beautiful truth is that you don't have to be famous or have a platform to make an eternal difference. Sometimes the most significant kingdom work happens through ordinary people who just make room for God to work through them.
So, as you go forward, carry this truth with you: you have been positioned exactly where you are for kingdom purposes. It all matters more than you know. Make room for God to work through you, and watch Him do immeasurably more than you could ask or imagine.
Bible Verse
"And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" - Esther 4:14
Reflection Question
What specific step will you take this week to "make room" for God to work through your life, resources, and circumstances?
Prayer
Lord, use me for such a time as this. Help me make room in my life for You to work through me. Use my gifts, my finances, my time, and my circumstances for Your kingdom purposes. I trust You to do immeasurably more than I can ask or imagine. Amen.
