Every person faces defining moments in life. These are the moments that reveal what we truly value, what we truly believe, and who we ultimately serve. They test our faith and call us to step beyond comfort and convenience. The story of Esther gives us a powerful reminder that God places us exactly where we need to be, exactly when we need to be there.

What Does “For Such a Time as This” Mean?

The phrase comes from the Book of Esther, where Mordecai challenges Queen Esther during one of Israel’s darkest hours. Around 480 B.C., under King Xerxes’ reign, the Jewish people were scattered and vulnerable, living under foreign rule. When Haman devised a plan to destroy them, Esther, a young Jewish woman who had become queen through what seemed like a coincidence but was really divine providence, found herself at a crossroads.

Mordecai urged her to approach the king and plead for her people’s lives. Doing so could cost her life, since no one, not even the queen, could appear before the king without being summoned. It was a defining moment that demanded both faith and courage.

Why Did Mordecai Challenge Esther?

When Esther hesitated, Mordecai reminded her of a powerful truth: “Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” He wanted her to see that she was not in her position by accident. God’s plan would continue with or without her, but she had the incredible privilege of being part of it.

Esther’s response showed complete surrender and courage. She said, “If I perish, I perish.” In that moment, she chose obedience over safety and faith over fear. Through her courage, God delivered an entire nation.

How Does God Position Us for His Purposes?

1. God Places You Where You Are on Purpose

Esther did not earn her position through ambition or strategy. She was placed there by God’s unseen hand. The same is true for you. It is not an accident that you live in this moment of history. Your job, home, relationships, and church family are all part of God’s divine arrangement.

You are not just an employee; you are a missionary in your workplace.

You are not just a volunteer; you are a vessel of God’s love.

You are not just a church member; you are part of God’s ongoing mission.

When you realize that your time, talents, and resources are gifts to be used for His purposes, your mindset shifts from asking “How much can I spare?” to “How much can I share?”

2. God’s Purposes Move Forward Through Our Courage and Obedience

Mordecai reminded Esther that silence is a choice, and so is courage. God’s plan will move forward, but He invites us to participate. Faith is not only believing in God’s promises but also acting on them, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Stewardship requires courage:

- The courage to give when the budget is tight

- The courage to serve when time feels limited

- The courage to lead when you would rather stay behind the scenes

- The courage to trust that your sacrifice makes a difference

God is not looking for perfection; He is looking for participation. When we step forward in faith, He meets us in our obedience.

3. God Blesses a Life That Is Fully Surrendered

Esther’s breakthrough came when she moved from hesitation to surrender. She fasted, prayed, and then acted. That pattern—pray, prepare, participate—is the rhythm of discipleship.

God blesses what we place in His hands. When we surrender our time, service, and finances, He multiplies them for His glory. Just as He used Esther’s courage to save a nation, He can use your obedience to impact lives.

Stewardship is not about fundraising; it is about faith raising:

- When we give, we declare that God is our provider.

- When we serve, we declare that God’s kingdom matters most.

- When we sacrifice, we declare that our lives belong to Him.

Are We Living in a Defining Moment Today?

We are living in a time when God’s Spirit is moving powerfully. Across college campuses, schools, and communities, there is a renewed hunger for truth and hope. The question is not whether God will move. The question is whether we will be part of what He is doing.

Each of us has been strategically placed to reach people that others cannot reach. Your influence, your voice, and your gifts matter. God has positioned you where you are to make an eternal difference.

Life Application

Take time this week to consider what act of courage God may be asking of you. It may be to serve more intentionally, to give more generously, or to mentor someone in need. You cannot control the outcome, but you can control your obedience.

Reflect on these questions:

- What defining moment am I facing where I need to choose courage over comfort?

- How can I use my time, talents, and resources more intentionally for God’s kingdom?

- What would change in my life if I truly believed that God placed me here “for such a time as this”?

- Where is God calling me to step out in faith, even when it feels risky?

You are here for such a time as this. God has positioned you exactly where you are to make a difference for His kingdom. The only question left is this: Will you rise to the call?
