As Thanksgiving approaches, many of us take time to reflect on the blessings in our lives. True gratitude, however, reaches deeper than simply acknowledging what we have. It calls us to remember what God has done, to recognize His faithfulness in our present circumstances, and to trust Him with our future.

Why Does Scripture Call Us to Remember?

Throughout the Bible, God’s people are instructed to remember. Psalm 77 says, “I remember your deeds, O Lord. I will remember your miracles from long ago.” These words are not simply poetic. They remind us that remembering is an act of worship. When we pause to reflect on the ways God has provided and guided us, our faith is renewed and our gratitude grows.

When we intentionally remember God’s work in our lives, three things take place:Our faith becomes strongerOur gratitude becomes deeperOur confidence for the future grows.

Remembering does not trap us in the past. As A.W. Tozer observed, the early church fathers looked to the past only long enough to find their direction. They trusted that the God who had guided the church before would continue to guide it forward.

Honoring Those Who Came Before Us

Every church has a history shaped by faithful believers who prayed, served, and sacrificed. Today’s congregations stand on the foundation they built. Many of them stepped into unknown territory with courage and vision, trusting God to do what they could not yet see.

They left us a legacy through:Sacrificial givingFaithful prayerCourageous leadershipSteadfast trust in God’s calling

Hebrews 13:7 urges us to remember such leaders and imitate their faith. We honor these men and women not to elevate them, but to recognize God’s faithfulness through their obedience.

Gratitude in the Present

Gratitude anchors us in humility. It reminds us that our church family, our calling, and our place in the body of Christ are not accidents. Acts 17:26 teaches that God determines the times and places in which we live. This means we are part of our church community for a divine purpose.

To be faithful in the present is to recognize that God has placed us here to serve Him with joy, to give generously, to welcome warmly, and to disciple others. When God is working among us, we must ask ourselves whether we are being faithful with the opportunities and resources He has entrusted to us.

Living Out the Mission Today

Our mission remains clear. We exist to help all people discover and deepen their relationship with Jesus while sharing His love with the world. This purpose shapes every ministry and guides every decision.

Thankfulness naturally leads to action. When we are truly grateful for what God has done, we cannot help but invest in the lives of others.

Facing the Future with Hope

Psalm 77:14 reminds us that God performs miracles and displays His power among all people. The God who was faithful in the past is the same God who leads us into the future. We look forward with faith rather than fear. Our past is a foundation, not a finish line. God is still writing our story.

What the Future Requires from Us

Our community continues to have significant needs.Families are searching for hopeChildren need to be discipledStudents need encouragementBroken hearts need healingPeople need to discover and deepen their relationship with Jesus.

Meeting these needs requires the same qualities that shaped previous generations. We must continue in faithful prayer, unity as a church, generous giving, and trust in God’s leading.

The Legacy We Will Leave

One day, future generations will look back on our faithfulness. They will ask whether we served well, gave generously, and trusted God to prepare the way for them. They will look for evidence that we were committed to making a difference for Jesus.

The question we must ask now is simple. What will they find when they examine our legacy?

Life Application

This week, commit to embracing all three aspects of faithful living. Be thankful for the past, faithful in the present, and focused on the future. Thanksgiving is not only about looking backward. It is also about lifting our eyes upward and forward.

Give thanks for the spiritual heritage you have received. Trust God in the circumstances you face today. Walk confidently into whatever He has prepared for you.

Ask yourself:How can I honor the spiritual legacy left by those before me?What is God calling me to be faithful with right now?How can I help create a strong legacy of faith for future generations?Am I serving joyfully, giving generously, and welcoming others with warmth?

As you celebrate Thanksgiving, let gratitude for God’s past faithfulness inspire your present obedience and fill you with hope for the future. Take your place in the ongoing story God is writing in your church and community.
